October 19, 2022, DENVER, CO – Pie Insurance (“Pie”), an insurtech company specializing in workers’ comp insurance for small businesses, today unveiled the winners of its first annual Upper Crust customer awards program. The inaugural awards program celebrates Pie’s small business customers who have achieved milestones, overcome obstacles, and served their communities over the past year. The 2022 Upper Crust awards recognizes four small business customer finalists who showcased immense innovation and resiliency, including one grand prize winner of $15,000 to use towards the growth of their business.
“Congratulations to all of this year’s Upper Crust customer awards winners, finalists and applicants,” said Dax Craig, co-founder and president of Pie. “We were blown away by the incredible stories shared by our small business customers and inspired by the transformations they’ve gone through over the past couple of years. The Upper Crust awards were created to honor their unique experiences and highlight how important small businesses are to our communities. We’re motivated more than ever to continue our mission of empowering small businesses to thrive by making commercial insurance affordable and as easy as pie.”
Upper Crust award judges selected four winners for this year’s program:
The Grand Prize was awarded to Kitchen33 and Bakery in Glen Allen, Virginia. Kitchen33 and Bakery considers themselves a community restaurant with a heavy emphasis on community. In addition to feeding those who can’t pay at no charge and providing training and job placement through a partnership with Beyond Boundaries, Kitchen33 and Bakery have taken a great interest in the community they serve, educating patrons on the importance of recycling, avoiding all single-use plastics, distributing children’s books on the impacts of plastics on the environment, and arranging monthly river cleanups to ensure their community is a place where people and animals can thrive.
Three additional Upper Crust award finalists include:
The team at Lea’s Floral Shop in East McKeesport, Pennsylvania wasn’t going to let a devastating fire be the excuse for shutting down their fourth generation family-owned business. Instead they rallied together and drove record sales.
When the owner of Breakaway Health, an outpatient treatment facility in Costa Mesa, California, unexpectedly passed away, his three children picked up the pieces to figure out how to ensure the business continued.
When the pandemic shut down the local community center, Lucky Frog Bar and Grill in McCausland, Iowa, stepped in to provide a meal delivery service to their local seniors.
